Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) put the renovated internal medicine department of the Carnot district hospital into service on 10 October 2026. Located in the Mambéré region of the République centrafricaine, the facility serves as a primary provider of medical care for the local population. Médecins Sans Frontières funded the renovation project in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Population. These improvements aim to restore functionality to the ward and enhance the delivery of health services within the district. The work represents a joint effort between the international organization and national health authorities to address infrastructure needs at the Carnot facility.

Longstanding Support for Hospital

Médecins Sans Frontières has provided consistent support to the Carnot district hospital since 2009. The organization expanded its infrastructure contributions in 2025 by constructing a pediatric service featuring a 72-bed capacity at the facility.

Internal Medicine Patient Statistics

The internal medicine department at the Carnot district hospital recorded 1,224 patient admissions throughout 2025. During the first eight months of 2026, the facility treated an additional 867 patients between January and August.

These figures track the volume of care provided by the ward prior to and during the recent renovation period. Virginie Napolitano, cheffe de mission de MSF, stated, "Cette réhabilitation contribue à améliorer durablement la qualité de l’accueil et des soins proposés aux patients, ainsi que les conditions de travail des équipes soignantes." The updated infrastructure serves to accommodate these patient populations while supporting clinical staff in the delivery of medical services. The department remains a critical component of the hospital's operations for the Mambéré region.

Pediatric Ward Service Data

The emergency pediatric unit at the Carnot district hospital recorded 8,321 patient visits during 2025. Between January and August 2026, the unit processed an additional 4,104 patient visits. These figures reflect the high volume of urgent care requirements handled by the facility's pediatric services.

Separately, the hospital's pediatric ward admitted 6,886 patients for treatment throughout 2025. Records for the period between January and August 2026 indicate the ward treated a further 2,537 patients. These statistics provide an overview of the patient load managed by the pediatric department within the Mambéré region. The data encompasses both emergency department encounters and inpatient ward admissions, illustrating the consistent demand for pediatric medical services at the Carnot facility during the current and previous calendar years.

Official Perspectives on Healthcare

Médecins Sans Frontières allocated a total of 69,279,706 FCFA to complete the renovation project at the Carnot district hospital. This investment covered the expenses required to restore the internal medicine department and upgrade the facility's infrastructure. Financial resources provided by the organization facilitated the structural improvements necessary to maintain health services in the Mambéré region. The project aligns with broader efforts by Médecins Sans Frontières to support the Ministry of Health and Population in enhancing medical capacity within the République centrafricaine. Expenditures for the renovation reflect the costs associated with upgrading the hospital environment to accommodate patient needs. These funds allowed for the completion of the work on the ward, which was officially put into service on 10 October 2026. The budget reflects the scale of the infrastructure project undertaken at the site.
